Did you know that there were a series of massive outdoor and indoor art exhibitions that took place in Gowanus in the early 1980’s? The Monumental Show (1981) and The Monument Redefined (1982) were founded by Frank Shifreen’s non-profit artist group The Gowanus Memorial Artyard, anddrew thousands of vistors to the banks of the Gowanus Canal. New York Magazine hailed the first show as “the event of the season” and the second featured works by renown artists such as Jean Claude and Christo, Carl Andre, Nancy Holt, Vito Acconci, Nancy Spero, Leon Golub and Chris Burden. These exhibitions are a huge part of the movement towards the artist-organized initiatives that happened in NYC soon after.
